Degrees:
Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Environmental Studies

Overview:
In partnership with the Environmental Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences offers a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Emphasis in Environmental Studies. Because the degree aims to provide a great deal of breadth in both the natural and applied sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences, the requirements are quite extensive, over 100 hours of the 120 a student normally takes during four years of college. Most of those hours are in the general education core and in prerequisites needed to take upper level courses in the emphasis area. Students interested in this major should consult with the Director of Environmental Studies as soon as possible to begin planning their course work.

In addition to the breadth of coursework required in the natural and applied sciences and the social and behavioral sciences, the emphasis area requires students to complete a Practicum Core of three classes distributed over their four years of schooling. The undergraduate seminar should be taken after at least one introductory environmental course. It will encourage the student to use her or his knowledge in analyzing environmental problems and in developing solutions while working in a team with other students. The internship requires students to work with a government, non-profit or private entity to assist with or implement solutions to environmental problems. The Environmental Studies program has contacts with city and state agencies and with a number of local environmental organizations and will provide assistance with finding an internship. The capstone course will require the student to bring together the knowledge and skills he or she has gained to address an environmental problem of his or her own choosing.
