Overview:
A major in German provides an education in a language and culture that is among the most significant today, both within Europe and beyond, While also developing skills in interpretation, culture analysis, and critical thinking, writing, and speaking. We offer courses on German Literature, film, and History while focusing on the acquisition of spoken word and written language skills. A major in German consists of 27 hours of study beyond the language requirement for the College of Arts and Science.

Academic Information

Admission Requirements:
Any student may declare a major in German. Students must complete College Algebra and English 1000 with a C- or above and have a 2.0 cumulative GPA to complete a graduation plan with the College of Arts & Science.

Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.0

Specifically required non-major courses for the BA degree:
None other than those required for Arts & Science Foundation requirements.

Entry-level courses to sample the major:
German 1100, 1200 or 2100: Elementary German (depending on placement)
German 2310: German Civilization: Beginning to 1850
German 2320: German Civilization: 1850 to Present
