Overview:
Classics is one of the founding departments in the University of Missouri. Its primary mission is the teaching of the languages, literature, history, and philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome. But its disciplinary range touches virtually all major aspects of early civilization in the Mediterranean's sphere of influence, from the ancient Near East to North Africa, Spain, Gaul, and even Britain. Little happened in these places that does not have some important impact on our world today; understanding those historical conditions and their implications for us is the mission of Classical Studies.

The Department of Classical Studies offers four major options for students interested in the mythology, literature, history, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Three of these major tracks—Latin, Greek, and Classical Languages—focus on learning the ancient languages and introduce students to advanced readings in Greek and Latin texts. Students completing these majors will be well prepared to teach the languages (typically Latin) in private or public secondary schools or, with sufficient work in both languages, will be prepared to undertake graduate study in Classics.

A fourth track, Classical Humanities, is available to those students who would like to study the Greek and Latin Classics in translation. Students may take elementary Latin or Greek then follow these language courses with a structured sequence of classes, all using texts in English translation, that guide them through a broad introduction to Classical literature and culture into more specialized study of some of the most important literary works of the western European tradition. The Classical Humanities track offers a thorough course of study to any student broadly interested in ancient culture and a sound pre-professional education.
