Overview:
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) focuses on lifespan human development and families in a variety of relational, social, and cultural contexts. Students and faculty conduct basic and applied research with a focus on the application of new knowledge to issues facing individuals and families. The commitment to individual and family diversity in research, teaching, and service distinguishes the academic programs.

Career opportunities are primarily found in human service agencies serving children, adolescents, older adults, parents, and families. The degree programs prepare the student for graduate study in HDFS and related fields.

HDFS majors will choose one of the following emphasis areas: child development and education, child life specialist, family studies, human development, and human development and family studies (dual degree with the School of Social Work).

Academic Information

Admission Requirements:
Students must have a 2.50 MU GPA to be admitted into a professional program in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.5

Specifically required non-major courses for the BS HES degree:
Psychology 1000: General Psychology
Sociology 1000: Introduction to Sociology
Nutritional Sciences 1034: Nutrition, Current Concepts and Controversies
Personal Finanical Planning 2183: Personal and Family Finance
One course in Statistics and one course in Communication
