Overview:
The Department’s mission is to educate future design practitioners, advance research of the built environment, and disseminate knowledge of architectural studies to improve quality of life for people. The philosophy of the Department of Architectural Studies embraces the synergy created between architecture and interior design. Having a symbiotic relationship, both fields explore the design process and its final products. Promoting the meaning and value of physical settings and responding to the human condition, the program investigates the interaction between people and their surroundings to create a more beautiful and sustainable world. The program encourages an interdisciplinary, scholarly climate celebrating aesthetic values and the human sciences.

Academic Information

Admission Requirements:
To be admitted to the sudio design program sequence, a student must have satisfactory completion of Arch St 1200 and one of the following: Arch St 1100, Art 1030 or Art 1050.

Architectural Studies is a selective admission area and meeting the minimum 2.0 GPA requirement does not guarantee admission to the program. It is recommended that students have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

Applications must be submitted at the end of the winter semester of the freshman year for enrollment in ARCHST 2811: Studio I.

Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.0

Specifically required non-major courses for the BS HES degree:
Art History and Archaeology 1110 or 1120: History of Western Art I or II
One course in Communication

Entry-level courses to sample the major:
Architectural Studies 1100: Visual Design
Art 1050: Drawing I
